Puja Vidhi (Rituals to Follow)
A day of purification and remembering the forefathers on Amavasya involves the following activities:
- Holy Dip (Snan): This is to be done before sunrise and preferably in the Ganga or other holy river. If you cannot reach the Ganga, take a bath at home adding a little Gangajal and some tila (black sesame seeds).
- Pitru Tarpan: Sit facing South, and pour water blended with tila (Til) to give your offerings. This is to be done to your father and forefathers while you seek their peace and blessings.
- Fasting (Vrat): Most devotees prefer to keep a day-long fast, although if this is too much, you could eat one Satvik meal.
- Charity (Daan): Donating food, clothing, or grain is regarded to be very virtuous, especially on this day, however, feeding a cow, a crow, or a dog is said to help your ancestors directly.
- Lighting Lamps: To reduce the effects of Pitru Dosha and Saturn, light a lamp made of mustard oil under a Peepal tree at night.
Mahatva (Spiritual Significance)
In Vedic astrology, Amavasya is special for a number of reasons.
- Blessings from Ancestors: On this day, it is said that the spirits of our ancestors come down to the earthly realm. Performing Shraddha or Tarpan helps to ensure a peaceful journey for the ancestor's soul, which in turn blesses the family with prosperity.
- Dosha Remediation: This tithi is the most powerful time frame to undertake remedies for Pitru Dosha and Kalsarpa Dosha.
- Mental Calmness: Since the Moon (which rules the mind) is absent, the ego is in a “low tide” state. This is a great time for deep mediation, silence (Maun), and self-reflection.
Special Variations:
- Mauni Amavasya: A day of complete silence to enhance one's spiritual power.
- Somvati Amavasya: Amavasya on a Monday is a very special and positive time for women offering prayers for the longevity of their husbands.
Note: Check your local Panchang for specific times of sunrise and sunset in your area. The beginning and ending of Tithi can vary slightly by location.
